Insanity and tentacled goodness in your Pen and Paper

[Welcome to Tabletoid! I’m going to make an effort to write about tabletop games (board, pen and paper, and the like) here on Destructoid. I’m but one man, so I can’t cover every little thing that comes out. Maybe Darren will take a break from science to help out. If not, it’ll mostly be what catches my eye.]

BetweenPathfinderandDungeons & Dragons, it’s not uncommon to find creatures and scenarios that were clearly influenced by the work of H.P. Lovecraft. If you wanted to take a deep dive into that universe, you could go straight toCall of Cthulhu, the first RPG that really used that setting to its full potential. But some of us nerds like to combine our swords ‘n sorcery with the existential awareness of Elder Gods looming in the corners of reality.

Sandy Petersen (author of theCall of Cthulhugame) and his son Arthur saw this niche and are creating a book that will bring Lovecraft to Pathfinder, fittingly called…Sandy Petersen’s Cthulhu Mythos for Pathfinder. I guess I didn’t really need that preceding sentence. Petersen Games’Kickstarterlaunched today and already reached its initial goal. The book will come with plot hooks, campaign starters, and a huge bestiary with Mythos monsters that have never been inPathfinderbefore.

If you’re rich person and can spend more than I’ll make this month on role-playing, you can help Petersen make the backstory and abilities for one of the Big Nasties in the book. The miniatures that you can get by pledging look just the right amount of disgusting. I wouldn’t mind using those for other games, too. Just gotta find a way to incorporate alien beings in my most recentD&Dcampaign. I don’t imagine that’d be too hard.

Anyway, cool stuff. I’m a big Lovecraft dork, especially if it’s used as more than just window dressing. Evidently there are plenty of people who feel the same.
