Time to bang us a Yangus
When it was first released on the PS2 in 2004,Dragon Quest VIIIdefiantly stood apart from the sea of pseudo-realistic, cut scene heavy RPGs and action games that largely populated the console at that time. It aspired to offer players polygon-based characters that worked hard to replicate illustrator Akira Toriyama’s signature 2D style, a big, open world to explore, and just enough story to allow players to stay anchored to the game’s setting, but not so much that they felt weighed down. These are just a few of the reasons that many consider the game to be a classic.
LikeXenoblade Chronicles, Dragon Quest VIIIdoesn’t look quite as good on the 3DS as it did on home consoles, but there is still enough here to get me hungry for a potential Western release. Let’s hope Square Enix has some good news for us next week at E3.
