On XBLA this week: Aqua and Metal Slug XX

Wednesday will see the release of two Xbox LIVE Arcade games. One has been on the cards for quite some time now, the other, not so much. That’d beMetal Slug XX(1200 Microsoft Points) andAqua(800 MSP). Having never gotten around to picking upMetal Slug XXfor PSP, I can’t say how it performs compared to prior installments. It looks as if they really stepped up the insanity, though, and that’s what I like to see....

Oopsies: IGN watermark on the cover of Okami

You Internet Matlocks sometimes amaze the hell out of me. Over onNeoGAF, a WiiOkamithread started up and it was pretty innocent enough until user bob digi pointed out a horrible fact. Right by Amaterasu’s mouth is the IGN watermark. I’m looking at the box as I write this up and sure enough, the IGN logo is there. What looks to have happened is that the horrible and lazy “artist” that made the cover liftedthis piecefrom IGN’s Web site....

Orcs sure do look cool in the Warcraft movie

Humans, less so The first official trailer for Duncan Jones’Warcraftmovie is out, and it looks all right! I think? It’s hard to say based on just this small amount of footage for a film not releasing until June 2016. As presented here, the story doesn’t seem intriguing, but I’m fond of the characters, the world(s), and the lore as they exist in the video games. How effectively they’ll translate to the big screen — and whether this hybrid CG / live-action approach for the cast pays off — remains to be seen....

Payday 3 will try to be ‘less dependent’ on online after brutal launch weekend

After a rough weekend of server instability and matchmaking problems,Payday 3publisher Starbreeze Entertainmenthas issued a public statementabout what went wrong that might just cheer players up a bit. In an apparent attempt to staunch the flow of blood from the near-mortal wounds inflicted by server issues, Starbreeze has done what any right-minded company would do and implied that it was somebody else’s fault. The statement opens with a blunt admittance of the main issues, stating that “matchmaking infrastructure has not performed as tested and expected,” apparently due to a massive influx of players....

There were annoying performance problems, unexplained frame drops, and generally a bunch of dicking around in the games settings needed to be done in order to get it in a playable state for many people....

Rest of us: Not considering Last of Us 2 ‘would be a disservice to ourselves and our fans’

So says Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer toldVideoGamerthat Naughty Dog isstill exploring ideasfor aLast of Ussequel. Apparently not doing so, “would be a disservice to ourselves and our fans.” I don’t know about that. “I think we always make a smart decision in that all of our games are self-contained stories so they don’t have to continue if we don’t want them to or if there’s no reason for them to continue,” Meyer said, halfway echoing my own reasoning for not wanting anotherLast of Us....

Review in Progress: Battlefield 2042

Uneven, to say the least It’s been a rocky (early access) launch forBattlefield 2042for many players, which comes as no surprise. Even when it works, and you’re not struggling with online errors kicking you back to the main menu, the results are mixed among fans, myself included. But after the way theopen beta went down, it’s actually smoother than I was expecting. We decided to turn down EA’s review event forBattlefield 2042in part because this is a multiplayer game with no campaign whatsoever, so I’m coming at you with around five hours of real-world playtime against other players and the AI....
