Mighty Gunvolt Burst deserves a little more credit for preserving the spirit of Mega Man

More than Mighty No. 9 did Inti Creates did what Comcept couldn’t withMighty No. 9— give us another qualityMega Mangame from a studio not named Capcom. Yes Inti Creates did help work onMighty, but given that they’ve been churning out hit after hit on their own and Comcept’s recent history has been dicey, it’s hard to put the burden on the former. Mighty Gunvolt Burstwas another bonafide hit, as it felt like a natural evolution of the 8-bitMega Manformula with a little modern spice to it, by way of mechanics like “create your own buster shot” and miniature RPG elements picked fromMega ManlikeV‘s or7‘s collectibles....

Mobius Final Fantasy is out now in the west

On Android and iOS Mobius Final Fantasymight have launched in Japan in June of 2015, but it’s out right now in the west on Android and iOS. It’s free to download, but requires server access to play (!), and features microtransactions. For the most part the game has been successful in Japan, and is most notable for its high production values, which are on par with a console RPG. I’d love to give you some impressions, but the servers are still being switched on at the time of this writing, and thus, I can’t play....

More info on Level-5’s Megaton Musashi, which is STILL not a Brave Fencer sequel, is coming soon

Let’s do it Level-5 revealedMegaton Musashiseveral years ago, and it just kind of sat since. The publisher is busy putting out games every few months, sure, but it would be nice to know what happened to this promising new franchise. As it turns out, we’re getting more info on December 21-22 at Jump Festa 20 in Tokyo. I’ll just say what everyone is thinking. OriginallyMegaton Musashiwas supposed to be a 3DS game that kicked off one of Level-5’s famous “cross-media” projects, but with the 3DS on the way out and practically no new games in development for it, the probably pulled the old Switcheroo....

Redbox app hitting PS3 with dumb curated playlists

‘Movies with balls’ Redbox is launching a PS3 app. It’s called Redbox Instant by Verizon, which I don’t really want to call it. $8 a month gives you access to Redbox’s streaming selection and “four DVD rental nights at the Redbox kiosk, every month.” You can also purchase or rent new digital releases without a subscription, which is likely the only thing I would ever consider using this for. Exclusive to the PS3 app is “The Playlist,” a curated set of movies “built specifically with the PlayStation gamer in mind....

Smaller is better: Hands-on with the 7-inch Wikipad

We met with the Wikipad folks during GDC last week to get our hands and eyes on the newly shrunken Wikipad, coming down from theoriginal 10-inch sizeto a more manageable (and more affordable) 7-inch version. At 10-inches, this dedicated gaming tablet was attractive, but its price ($499) and size made it less of a real portable gaming device and more of an in-home gaming luxury. you’re able to ask Sweet Brown what I think about that....

SOMA handles horror differently than Amnesia

Frictional compares the two In June, I told myself tostay awayfrom watching and subsequently covering any more trailers forSOMA. That was going well — until today. Curiosity got the better of me, but at least this “Environments” trailer is abstract enough to not feel spoilery. Won’t be much longer now until the September 22 release for PC and PlayStation 4. Will I crack again? While we’re on the subject, Frictional Games has anew blog post updescribing howSOMAcompares and contrasts with its prior game,Amnesia: The Dark Descent, in terms of scares, puzzles, and storytelling....

Street Fighter IV sequel may be announced soon … maybe

The official JapaneseStreet Fighter IVbloghas revealed that they will be making a statement about a potential newStreet Fightergame. The announcement, by way of Natsuki Shiozawa and Yoshinori Ono, promises that something will be said. Granted, they might just end up saying that a sequel won’t be happening at all, but it’s weird that they would hype up an announcement about no announcement. AsAndriasang points out, Tokyo Game Show is next week and we may hear something about whatever this is about then....
